Allied Health and Health Practitioners
The Townsville HHS is home to a clinically diverse group of allied health practitioners, from first-year graduates to those specialising in their chosen fields. Our health service offers a unique opportunity to progress your health career in a tertiary setting without the confines of a big city.
Our staff work to top of scope with a diverse client base and are exposed to a variety of pathologies on the front line; no two days will ever be the same. Our staff experience a variety of health settings, including outreach to our rural and remote communities and telehealth appointments.
With an appetite for innovation and flexibility in the delivery of its care, the Townsville HHS listens to its clinicians and puts ideas into action to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients.
The allied health department also has a dedicated research arm that is available to assist staff, whether novice or experienced, on their research journeys and given the diversity of the region the research opportunities are endless.
Our practitioners include physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, pharmacists, medical imaging professionals, dieticians, audiologists, clinical measurement practitioners, orthotics and prosthetics, social work, podiatrists and psychologists.
If you’re looking for work-life balance, while maintaining a fulfilling career, consider a move to the Townsville HHS.
There are specific requirements to practice in Australia for allied health practitioners. Find out information about requirements to practice for each discipline and for internationally qualified allied health professionals.

Brittany Vella – JCU medal for outstanding academic achievement awardee and first-year graduate speech pathologist
"As a new graduate, the speech pathology rotational program at The Townsville Hospital really appealed to me. It provides clinicians with the opportunity to experience a variety of caseloads and develop foundation clinical skills, while also meeting your specific learning goals and up-skilling in areas such as video-fluoroscopy and fibreoptic endoscopy of swallowing. I am currently working in the paediatric caseload and will rotate through rehabilitation, medical and surgical caseloads. My speech pathology colleagues, seniors and supervisors have been incredibly supportive in both my clinical management of patients and my transition in the hospital environment. I have had a really great experience starting out at TTH as a new graduate and look forward to expanding my clinical skills and continuing to grow as a speech pathologist!"
Dr Kelvin Robertson - Advanced pharmacist and Human Research Ethics Committee Chair Kelvin Robertson
"I’m proud to work for an organisation that has a true passion and commitment towards its community. The close collaboration that the HHS has with James Cook University has also allowed me to complete my PhD research, while working full-time. My accelerated career progression is due to the opportunities Townsville HHS has provided which are the same, if not better than our metropolitan counterparts."
Jenni Meehan – Senior emergency department physiotherapist
"Being a tertiary facility in a great location, The Townsville Hospital affords many opportunities for physiotherapists while maintaining work-life balance. My 10 years at The Townsville Hospital has not only give me an opportunity to work across all clinical areas, but also to specialise in emergency department physiotherapy. As part of this role I have been able to develop the service, complete further training and progress the career pathway for ED physiotherapy to include trialling the emergency physiotherapy practitioner role. The best part is I’ve been able to do all this, right here in Townsville, and not had to travel to a capital city."
