Prosthetic and Orthotic Services
Townsville University Hospital offers a comprehensive prosthetic and orthotic service across the lifespan to support patients through their acute hospital admission, recovery following discharge or when accessing other specialist outpatient services. Prosthetists and orthotists work closely with medical officers, nursing and other allied health staff to optimise patient recovery and well-being.
Inpatient services at TUH
Inpatients Prosthetic and Orthotic services supply, manufacture and fit prosthetic and orthotic devices for inpatients that meet eligibility criteria. Services offered include:
- diabetic patients with high-risk feet
- wounds / amputations
- orthopaedic injuries
- neurosurgical patients, including spinal patients
- vascular injuries
Outpatient services
Outpatient Prosthetic and Orthotic services supply, manufacture and fit prosthetic and orthotic devices for patients in the Townsville hospital and health service catchment that meet eligibility criteria. Services include:
- Provision of medical grade footwear, custom insoles, education around foot and wound health
- Lower limb orthoses (AFOs)
- Orthotic management of spinal injuries and braces with education and training
- Orthopaedic bracing
- Interim prostheses
- Paediatric services
- Custom manufacture of helmets for plagiocephaly infants
- Orthotic management for infants with club foot or talipes
- Orthotic management of DDH
Outpatient services are based at the Kirwan Health Campus with an extensive well-equipped workshop where manufacturing and outpatient clinics take place.
