North Queensland Kidney Transplant Service
Queenslanders living in the state’s north will soon have access to lifesaving kidney transplant services closer to home with the expansion of the Statewide Kidney Transplant Service.
The surgical component of the North Queensland service will be based at Townsville University Hospital and will be supported by a networked service model with other regional and remote hospitals within the five regions, as well as the current Kidney Transplant Service in Brisbane.
The Townsville Hospital and Health Service (HHS) is developing a business case to establish a kidney transplant service for North Queensland.
Our experts are working with patients, clinicians across the catchment, and subject matter experts to co-design a kidney transplant service to meet the unique geographic, socioeconomic, and cultural needs of patients before, during and after kidney transplantation.
Once established, our kidney transplant service will complement the existing Townsville Renal Service, which provides acute and chronic renal-replacement therapy in a variety of settings including acute hospital care, satellite and home-based haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis to patients with renal failure.
The business case was submitted to the Queensland Department of Health in late 2022.
We will continue to the update the community on the development of this service.
