North Queensland Kidney Transplant Service
Townsville Hospital and Health Service has secured funding to develop the North Queensland Kidney Transplant Service at the Townsville University Hospital.
Once operational, the service will be the second kidney transplant service in Queensland and the only one of its kind outside the south-east corner.
The service will treat local patients as well as people from communities across north Queensland including Cairns, Mackay, Cape York, Mount Isa, and the Torres Strait Islands.
Our health service worked with patients and clinicians across this catchment as well as subject matter experts to co-design a kidney transplant service which meets the unique geographic, socioeconomic, and cultural needs of north Queensland dialysis patients before, during, and after kidney transplantation.
It is anticipated the service will perform the first kidney transplant in north Queensland in early 2025.
The North Queensland Kidney Transplant Service will provide transplant surgeries at Townsville University Hospital and will work in partnership with regional and remote hospitals across the catchment to prepare patients for transplant and care for them after surgery in their local communities.
Our service will complement the existing Townsville Renal Service, which provides acute and chronic renal-replacement therapy in a variety of settings including acute hospital care, satellite and home-based haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis to patients with renal failure.
