Double the joy for twin bundle on Twosday

Published:  22 February 2022

A Townsville couple has a special reason to forever remember Twosday – the cosmic number phenomenon 22/2/22 – as they welcomed not one but two babies with the arrival of twins Olly and Abbie Leworthy.

Sarah Furnell and Matt Leworthy said two was their lucky number with their babies arriving earth-side yesterday.

Ms Furnell gave birth to the babies at 36 weeks via caesarean section at Townsville University Hospital.

“I came into the hospital on Friday for what I thought was going to be a normal ultrasound, but my blood pressure was high so they wanted to keep me in over the weekend for monitoring and potentially induce the birth,” Ms Furnell said.

“Over the weekend they tried to induce labour with the balloon, but the babies wouldn’t have a bar of it so the caesarean was locked in instead, honestly we were just so excited to meet them.”

Both Ms Furnell’s and Mr Leworthy’s families have a history of twins, so it was only a small surprise when at just six weeks pregnant they were informed they were also having twins.

“Matt was away when we found out we were having a baby, and then just one week later I had my first ultrasound while he was away and got the news it was twins,” Ms Furnell said.

“We didn’t know the gender of the babies before they were born yesterday, but Matt has a brother and a sister who are twins, and my cousins are also boy-girl twins so we were sure it would be a boy and a girl as well.

“We only had one name of each picked, but we did have a shortlist of names ready to go and were ready to pick once we had seen the babies."

Mr Leworthy said they were looking forward to spending some time at home as a new family.

“We won’t have much choice about having family pop by and visit, but it will be nice to spend some time alone especially while Sarah is recovering,” he said.

“But the hardest part will actually be getting Sarah to sit still and rest, she always wants to be moving and doing something.

“We’ve only just moved to Ayr a month ago to be closer to Sarah’s family, and it will be nice to have the support and have everyone close by.”
