Considering a career in health management?

Published:  23 November 2022

We're looking for people who have completed their university studies in the last three years and are keen to fast-track their career through our unique health management internship program.

Townsville Hospital and Health Service's director of strategy and planning Billy Bragg completed his internship in 2017 after completing a Bachelor of Economics with Honours at James Cook University and hasn't looked back.

"I definitely wasn't doing the filing; I was working on some of the most exciting projects in the organisation while also learning from senior managers throughout the entirety of my internship," Billy said.

"Each day is different. You are constantly learning and being challenged.

"Which is exactly what you want as a graduate."

Billy said completing his internship set him up for an exciting career.

"In the last few years alone I've got to work on a range of things, such as looking at how we can improve our current services, implementing large-scale change, modelling the future health demands of the community to inform funding and infrastructure needs, designing new services like the kidney transplant unit, $100 million IT rollouts, the $530 million Townsville University Hospital expansion as well as statewide health policy reform," he said.

"The projects I've been fortunate to work on show you don’t need to move to the big cities to have a great career.

"People forget how big we are - if our health service was a private company, with our budget and workforce, we’d be in the ASX200. And working for my local health service in the community I grew up in and call home definitely makes the work more special."
