Calvary cards keeps spirits high

Published:  08 May 2020

Staff at Townsville University Hospital were delighted to receive a special delivery of hand-made cards from Calvary Christian College last week, thanking staff for their commitment to keeping the community safe during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

Calvary Christian College year six teacher Hilkka Hughes said students of essential workers from years three to six put the cards together in the last week of term one to thank healthcare workers for ‘the wonderful job they do’.

“We were encouraging the students to think about all the hard work and effort of all the healthcare workers during this pandemic,” Mrs Hughes said.

“We are always trying to teach the students to have a ‘servant’ heart as this is one of our school’s values.

“The kids loved making these cards; it is a wonderful thing to know that they can make a difference in the world by simply showing gratitude.”

With heartfelt messages like ‘you’re the best hospital thank you for helping the sick people’ and ‘you are really kind and brave to help others’, the messages were gratefully received by staff.

“While there’s been a lot of work going on in the background to make sure our health service is prepared for COVID-19, people in the community still need our help in emergencies and for urgent surgeries and appointments,” health service chief executive Kieran Keyes said.

“The amount of community support over the past two months has been astounding and I know it really bolsters staff spirits knowing that the community has their backs.

“A big thank you to the Calvary Christian College students for taking the time to think of us; it put a huge smile on all our faces.”
